The NYPD use-of-force review

Mayor Mamdani ordered the NYPD's first use-of-force review in a decade after Officer Salvatore Alongi, who shot Win Rozario in Queens in March 2024, retired on a disability pension without the CCRB being notified, so he will never face a disciplinary trial. The fight is over whether new retirement safeguards and a bigger NYPD Inspector General's office produce real accountability, with the PBA calling the move an appeasement of Mamdani's base.

Mamdani ordered the NYPD to review its use-of-force practices and added $2.6 million to the NYPD Inspector General's office, which City Hall says will triple its headcount. Under the new rules, a retiring officer with pending CCRB charges is reported to the state for decertification. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch apologized for the missed CCRB notice and the NYPD says the employee who missed it was demoted, while PBA president Patrick Hendry said the announcement is meant to appease the mayor's base.
